Mark Twain
The short story “Luck” by Mark Twain is such a
funny and interesting story. The story is about a clergyman that helps a stupid
guy get through military academy and he eventually becomes a decorated war hero
because of his luck and dumb acts. The way the clergyman explains the lucky and
stupid man is so funny. The funniest part about the story is how the clergyman
tells the narrator how responsible he felt for the man getting into the army
and how upset he is at himself for allowing him to become part of the army
which he will most likely mess up. He describes how he felt so bad about
helping the man graduate from school that he felt obligated to follow the man
to war to keep him from losing the whole war for the country. Then somehow,
through many lucky instances the man becomes colonel of the entire army! When
he is given instructions during a battle, he does the exact opposite of the
instructions and luckily wins a big victory for the country. He is decorated
with many awards and becomes famous just because of his luck. The clergyman
tells the narrator that the colonel is one of those people that have all the
luck in the world. This story is a fun read because of the funny way Mark Twain
wrote it. I would recommend reading it for a light read when you want to get
away from all the serious stories that are out there. It is sure to make you
laugh and is a very interesting read. I love this story and hope that if you
read it you will too!
It may be true luck is needed to get better in
life as well as intelligence. The most important thing to get luck is the
ability to believe everything and everybody around one. Being nice and pleasant
like Scores by is the key to get such ability, isn't it?
The real is the same. Many people are promoted
or have risen at work when they are really non-intelligent or hard worker. You
need luck in your life to get better at your work or your personal life, not
only to work hard. Work hard helps you to get better but it is not the only
factor. That is life. It is my opinion.
The story tells us something important. A man
who is nice and pleasant will be lucky in whole his life, won't he?
Alternatively, we could say a time will create a hero. We also can say that a
kind person will get good repayment by heaven. In fact the story connote that
if we got support from the others, we would be successful.
The
author indicates the importance of being born 'lucky'. Even the worst
situations that we are up against can be turned in to the most favorable if we
have a little luck. Clemens himself had been up against a lot of trouble during
his childhood but managed to be a steamboat pilot, there he received his
richest store of literary material. His keen sense of humour is once again
brought to light.
